Local children not getting assessment of need for disabilities within legal timeframe

New data shows the average wait time for assessments in the second quarter of the year was over two years.

An average of 41.8 per cent of children have received an Assessment of Need within the legal timeframe of six months in the Shannonside region so far this year.

The aim of an Assessment of Need under the Disability Act is to identify whether a person has a disability, the nature and extent of the disability, any health and education needs arising from that disability, as well as what services are required to meet those needs.

From January 1st to March 31st, 39.6 per cent of were in receipt of an assessment across Longford/Westmeath, Sligo/Leitrim and Roscommon.

The figures were slightly better from April 1st to June 30th, however, where 44 per cent received assessment.
