Local Barracks not to be used for refugee housing says Government

Custume Barracks is not one of the locations under consideration for a temporary refugee centre.

Custume Army Barracks in Athlone will not be used to house refugees from the Ukrainian Conflict.

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar had confirmed last week that militarity facilities across the country would be considered as temporary refugee centres.

One such temporary facility opens at Gormanston Military Camp in county Meath today, with four others to be set up in state owned centres across the country.

In a statement to Shannonside FM, The Department of Intergration has confirmed the Athlone Military Barracks will not be used for housing refugees at this time.

The country's main reception facility at CityWest reached capacity last week - resulting in Ukrainians spending a number of nights at Dublin Airport.
