A Leitrim man has died in hospital following an alleged assault in County Mayo over the weekend.
Peter McDermott had been receiving treatment following a serious assault in Westport in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The man in his 60s was attacked on High Street in the town between 1am and 2am on Saturday.
He passed away at Mayo University Hospital this evening, with a post mortem examination due to take place in due course.
A man in his 20s was arrested this morning and released from custody, hours before the victim passed away.
Mr McDermott was a native of County Leitrim and had farming interests in Roscommon.
Gardaí are appealing for anyone in the area of High Street in Westport on Saturday morning who witnessed anything or who may have CCTV or dash cam footage, to make contact with local Gardaí.
