Leitrim County Council has heard that there are hundreds of householders who are frustrated at not being able to connect to high-speed broadband which is within metres of their homes.

Councillors Mary Bohan and Brendan Barry brought motions to the monthly meeting of the local authority to highlight the slow pace of the roll-out of the multi-billion euro National Broadband Plan within the county

The meeting heard in north Leitrim, one half of a village was not able to access internet as the fibre cable was underground and internet access is now as important as rural electrification was over sixty years ago.

Councillor Barry recently encountered a national broadband employee collecting information on poles that will carry fibre by the side of the road.

The Sinn Fein representative says that what he saw would not inspire him with confidence for a quick rollout:
