At his funeral Mass in Frenchpark, Fr Micheál Donnelly remembered him as a "mountain of love".
His love of the motor industry was also noted, with keys to his van, a mobile phone and a screwdriver among the gifts brought up to the altar.
His inquest is taking place in the courthouse in Ballaghaderreen shortly after midday today.
This will determine the facts of his death, focusing on when, where and how he died.
