A family home has been destroyed and a dog has been killed in a house fire in Athlone.

The blaze broke out in the property in Clonbrusk on Tuesday morning around 8 o'clock.

Tanya had been living there with her 19-year-old daughter, Lydia, for several years.

Fire services and gardai rushed to the scene - but Tanya's friend, Mary Joyce, says they couldn't prevent major damage:

Tanya is now living in an apartment in Athlone and Lydia is staying with her grandmother.
