Governments urge NI politicians to form executive this week

Sinn Fein took the most seats at the election.

The Northern Ireland Secretary says he will address the issue of the protocol when he meets with the leaders of the main parties at Stormont later.

Sinn Fein is set to nominate Michelle O'Neil as First Minister this week after the party's historic win.

Brandon Lewis will urge the parties to form an Executive as soon as possible - as it hasn't been able to function since February.

Nuala McAllister won a seat for the Alliance party which almost doubled it's representation in last week’s elections.

The British and Irish Governments are urging politicians in Northern Ireland to form a government this week.

Secretary of State Brandon Lewis will meet party leaders at Stormont today, before speaking with Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney on the phone.
