The government is being urged to back an ambitious plan to make Athlone Ireland's first green city. The plan, put forward by Seán Mulryan's Ballymore Group, would aim to cater for a population of 100,000 in Athlone by 2040. The plan includes growing the TUS campus there to 25,0000 students, creating a 5,000 bed eco-friendly students village and 5,000 hectares of rewilded wetlands. The new city would aim to generate 90 per cent of its energy from renewable sources. South Roscommon councilllor John Keogh says it's an ambitious plan:
