The officer has been named as 49-year-old Kevin Flatley, a father-of-two, who was based in the roads policing unit in Dublin Castle.

A garda has been killed after being stuck by a motorcycle at a speed checkpoint in Co Dublin this afternoon.

The officer has been named as 49-year-old Kevin Flatley, a father-of-two, who was based in the roads policing unit in Dublin Castle.

Garda Kevin Flatley was conducting a speed checkpoint just before 1pm this afternoon on the R132 north of Ballbriggan in Dublin when the collision occurred.

He was critically injured at the scene and was pronounced dead a short time later.

The motorcyclist, aged in his 30s, also suffered serious injuries.

The Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said everyone in the force has been heartbroken by what has happened.

Meanwhile Gardai are appealing for witnesses to come forward, particularly anyone who may have dash cam footage of the incident.
