Former Taoiseach John Bruton dies aged 76

He died peacefully at the Mater Hospital in Dublin early this morning.

Former Taoiseach John Bruton has died.

In a statement his family say the 76 year old died peacefully at the Mater Hospital in Dublin early this morning surrounded by his family after a long illness.

He was elected to the Dáil to represent Meath in 1969, becoming Taoiseach from 1994 to 1997  and was leader of Fine Gael from 1990 to 2001.

He was appointed as the EU Ambassador to the United States following his resignation from the Dáil.
