Fine Gael councillors will only be allowed to endorse Heather Humphreys for the presidency.
It's part of a statement issued by Fine Gael to its party members, which announced the decision that councillors will not be able to nominate any other candidate for the Áras.
It comes as local authorities across the country are preparing to hold special meetings which will hear from independent candidates seeking their support.
In the event of a nomination of a person other than ratified candidate Heather Humphreys, the Fine Gael local authority members are whipped to oppose it.
