Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill has apologised after having been convicted in the District Court for dangerous driving
Taoiseach and party leader Micheál Martin says the Kerry TD has rightly received his punishment in the courts.
The Taoiseach says he has spoken to Deputy Cahill and this incident was completely and utterly unacceptable.
Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill is offering his sincere and unreserved apology for driving at an unacceptable speed on the M8 in County Cork, between Mitchelstown and Fermoy last year.
Deputy Cahill says at the time, he was travelling from Leinster House to a meeting at St. Mary of the Angels in St Francis' Special School in Beaufort, County Kerry, when he was stopped by a garda.
He says he's very sorry and there's no excuse for his actions, he will not appeal the conviction and will step back as a member of the Joint Oireachtas Justice Committee.
The Taoiseach says the matter will also be considered by the party’s Rules & Procedures Committee in due course.
