The National Irish Famine Way, which begins in Co Roscommon, is set to expand to the United States this year.

The US Global Irish Famine Way follows the trail in Canada, which was established last year.

It comes as part of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in the United States, which will also celebrate the contribution of the Irish diaspora to the country's foundation.

Hilary T Beirne is the chairman emeritus of the New York City St Patrick's Day Foundation and hails from Boyle.

He says this project will continue strengthening Ireland's bond with the US:
