Electricity consumption fell in 2023 across the Shannonside region

Non residential properties such as businesses or industry saw the highest drain on the grid locally last year.

Electricity consumption in the Shannonside Region dropped last year compared to 2022. Figures from the CSO show the amount of gigawatt hours consumed across Longford, Leitrim and Roscommon year on year.

A gigawatt hour is a unit for measuring energy and expresses the amount of energy produced or consumed by a device or equipment with the power of one gigawatt for one hour. Roscommon saw a drop of 4 Gigawatt hours from 2022 with 238 recorded last year.

Longford homes and businesses consumed 241 gigawatt hours in 2023, down three on the previous year. Leitrim saw a minor drop with a difference of just one Gigawatt hour when comparing the last two years.
