Efforts to build two wind turbines in Roscommon are continuing in the form of a new planning application. A similar refusal had been appealed to An Bord Pleanála last year following the county council's rejection of the proposal in Derrane and Roxborough. The plans have seen a number of attempted applications and alterations in an attempt to construct the turbines. The project comprises of the development of two wind turbines, control room and an ESB MV station at Derrane & Roxborough, with a proposed output of 4.9 mega watts.
Under the application, Turbine one would have a hub height of 99 metres and a blade tip height of 168 metres, while Turbine two would have a hub height of 81 metres and a blade tip height of 150 metres. The most recent step in the applicant's attempts to get the go ahead for the development was when planning permission was refused by Roscommon County Council, with that refusal upheld by An Bord Pleanála. At that time An Bord Pleanála cited they were not satisfied that the effect of the development could be properly assessed. The higher planning authority also noted that limited bird surveying work had been done in the application. A new application has now been submitted to County Planners with a decision due later in the summer.
