It comes as the €1,000 fee reduction, which was introduced in recent years due to the cost of living, will expire this year.

A young Green party representative from Co Leitrim says the decision to hike up student contribution fees is 'disappointing.'

It comes as the €1,000 fee reduction, which was introduced in recent years due to the cost of living, will expire this year.

A demonstration in protest of the government's decision will be held outside Leinster House next Tuesday evening, and will be attended by students and parents.

Higher Education Minister James Lawless has announced a 'cost of education' paper is to be assembled and published this summer.

But the Green Party's Adam Ó Ceallaigh, from Drumshanbo, says the government seems to be kicking the can down the road:
