The Courts Service spent €1.5 million on a temporary courthouse in Roscommon.
Carrick-on-Shannon-based judge James Faughnan expressed his disappointment only one courtroom had been provided in Roscommon despite the amount of money spent, when two had been available in their old building.
He called for a temporary second courtroom to be established on site, which he said could be provided at little cost if lending itself to a timber frame type construction.
The judge was one of three who highlighted their concerns to the Courts Service.
A spokesperson from the independent state agency confirmed the old Roscommon courthouse had been closed by the OPW on the grounds of health and safety.
