Councils called on to protect landlords renting through housing support schemes

Padraig Finnegan says his property has been left in ruins, leaving him facing significant financial cost in cleaning and repairing the house.

County Councils must do more to protect landlords who provide accommodation through rental schemes when it comes to problem tenants.

The call comes for the landlord of a Longford property that was left in terrible condition following the exit of the tenant recently.

Padraig Finnegan says his property has been left in ruins, leaving him facing significant financial cost in cleaning and repairing the house.

Speaking to the Joe Finnegan Show, Padraig describes the state in which he found his property, with listeners warned the following description may be upsetting to some:

Padraig has been renting the property to the tenant through the Rental Accommodation Scheme which provides housing to individuals on rent supplements and who have a long term housing need.

R.A.S. is managed through the local authority and involves a three way relationship between the tenant, the Council and the landlord.

The landlord told the JF Show that he's facing a major cost in not only emptying and cleaning the property but also repairing the damage caused.

He's calling on Longford County Council to help bring the property back online:
