Councillors in Roscommon and Leitrim have been presented with potential options for the future of Rooskey Bridge. The five arched stone bridge over the River Shannon was built in 1845 by the Commissioners for the Improvement of the Navigation of the River Shannon. Local councillors have raised concerns over the issues facing vehicles on the bridge and the danger they could present to pedestrians crossing.
At separate meetings of Roscommon and Leitrim County Council's last week, Councillors were presented with potential options for safe pedestrian access of the bridge. These include a pedestrian path on the bridge requiring traffic lights at each end, a separate pedestrian bridge or a cantilever bridge along side the existing structure. Leitrim Councillor Sean McGowan says local representatives in both Counties are united on one option.
