A local councillor has welcomed a High Court judge's deferral over the case of an IPAS centre in Athlone.
The State had been planning to locate up to 1,000 asylum seekers at a centre in Lissywollen.
Local councillors and representatives brought the case to court over an error made by the State in screening the project for potential environmental impacts.
The most recent sitting of the case took place yesterday, where an overall verdict on the centre was deferred until the next sitting on July 21st.
In the meantime, the Court has requested the State to produce legislation to demonstrate how it intends to regularize the site, and that the number of applicants be 'substantially' reduced from the centre to ensure suitable and appropriate accommodation.
