A Roscommon Councillor believes pedestrian concerns over Rooskey Bridge can be addressed by widening the structure.
Recent meetings of Roscommon and Leitrim County Council's were presented with potential solutions for the future of the bridge.
These include a pedestrian path on the bridge requiring traffic lights at each end, a separate pedestrian bridge or a cantilever bridge along side the existing structure.
The majority of Councillors favour the cantilever bridge option similar to the bridge crossing the river in Carrick on Shannon.
However, Councillor Tom Crosby has stated he does not support any of the presented options, instead arguing for the resumption of plans from 2009 that called for the structure itself to be widened.
The bridge was built in 1845, with Councillor Crosby stating the original stonework could be used to maintain the landmark's history.
