Connolly leads the way in Sligo-Leitrim

Catherine Connolly looks set to top the poll in the Sligo-Leitrim constituency.

Tallying began at 9am this morning at the Mercy College in Sligo town with counters assembling votes for the Independent candidate, Jim Gavin of Fianna Fáil, Heather Humphreys, who was representing Fine Gael as well as spoiled votes.

200 boxes operate across the constituency with the 120 in Sligo opened first, then south Donegal's sixteen followed by 64 in Leitrim.

A Galway West TD, tally figures indicate Catherine Connolly has picked up 24,146 (56%) first preference votes.

Heather Humphreys follows that on 12,023 (28%) and Jim Gavin on 2,028 (5%).

The overall spoiled votes total, according to tally figures, amounted to 4,769 (11%).

In terms of county Leitrim, 6,859 gave Catherine Connolly their first preference vote. Jim Gavin received 686, while Heather Humphreys received 4,410.

There were 1,560 spoiled votes in county Leitrim.

Gorvagh Community Centre picked up the highest number of spoiled votes in the county at 21%.
