Concerns as virus transmission in Roscommon and Leitrim on the rise

The 14-day incidence rate in Carndonagh local electoral area in Donegal is currently over eight times the national average.

The Carrick on Shannon Local electoral area and the Athlone LEA in Roscommon are reporting some of the highest levels of virus transmission in the country.

On Monday, the country's 14-day incidence rate was 344 cases per 100,000 of the population - but several LEAs have several times that.

New data from the European Centre for Disease prevention and Control also shows Ireland has the seventh highest 14-day incidence rate in the EU.

The Carrick on Shannon and Athlone LEAs have both seen the spread of Covid 19 increase over the last number of weeks with Carrick currently recording a 14 day incidence rate of 598 with 68 new cases in the region.

The Athlone LEA is recording similar figures with a 14 incidence rate of 555 and 111 new cases of the virus confirmed in the last fortnight.

The Ballinamore MD in Leitrim has also presented figures over the national average with a incidence rate of 425 and 42 new cases in the last 14 days.

Elsewhere in Roscommon, the Boyle area has a rate of 393, while the Roscommon Municipal District is reporting low levels at 171 per 100,000 population.

Longford's Municipal districts are all reporting virus transmission levels below the national average of 333, the Granard LEA the highest locally at a transmission rate of 234.

Nationally, The 14-day incidence rate in Carndonagh local electoral area in Donegal is currently over eight times the national average.
