Close to 230 housing commencement notices were lodged across the Shannonside region so far this year. The figures have been released by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. A Commencement Notice is a notification to a Building Control Authority that a person intends to carry out works or a material change of use to a building. In the Shannonside region, Co. Westmeath had the most notices at 94. That's followed by Co. Roscommon at 71, and 38 in Co. Leitrim.
Co. Longford has the fewest in the region, at 26. A total of 229 commencement notices were received as of July 2025, a sharp decrease of 79% since the same period in 2024. Nationally, just over 7,300 housing commencement notices have been issued in the first seven months of the year. 1,009 were lodged in July alone. From January to July, 29 per cent of the notices were in the four Dublin local authorities.
