There's a cautious welcome locally to the increase of the eligible animals for the 2025 Beef Welfare Scheme. This year's scheme is worth €28 million to the sector, and aims to offer straightforward, farmer-friendly actions aimed at improving calf welfare and animal performance.

While the increase in animals eligible for payment is seen as a positive step, it's felt it needs to further reflect the realities of suckler farming. Local Councillor and member of the ICSA, Brendan Barry feels the farmers have enough on their plate:
