Over 4,000 patients over 70 who need cataract operations to correct sight will have to fork out more if they go over the border for treatment.

The condition is common in older people and occurs when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, leading to a loss of sight.

A bus is being organised by Roscommon Rapid Response at the beginning of September to take patients to Belfast for treatment.

The issue of waiting lists for cataract surgery has seen special buses arrange din various parts of the country in recent years to bring people to Northern Ireland to get the procedure done
