Cannabis Decriminalisation Bill to be moved in Dail today

The issue of decriminalising cannabis continues to divide public opinion

The decriminalisation of cannabis could be moving a step closer as People Before Profit move the Cannabis Decriminalisation Bill in Dáil today.

Party TD Gino Kenny will move the Bill in an effort to amend the Misuse of Drugs legislation.

The Bill proposes to enable a person who is at least 18 years of age to have possession of cannabis for personal use that does not exceed a specified amount..

However Deputy Kenny says decriminalisation should not just apply to cannabis.

'People Before Profit is supportive of the decriminalisation model, where people are not criminalised for personal drug use, regardless of what the drug is.

Now that doesn't mean the drugs, certain Class A drugs are still illegal, but the person using them is not criminalised, and that's a better system.'
