There will be calls today for a tractor training school to be set up in Granard Mart for teenagers.
The call will be made at Longford County Council's meeting this afternoon.
At the moment, you're allowed to drive a tractor from the age of 16, even with only a learner permit.
The Road Safety Authority is reviewing the age limit and training requirements for 16-year-olds driving tractors.
Changes could be made next year.
Farm Safety Minister Michael Healy-Rae said last year he wants to keep it as it is.
He said younger family members must drive a tractor, out of necessity, on many farms.
At today's meeting of Longford County Council, Independent councillor Turlough McGovern will call for a training facility to be located in a central location like Granard Mart.
He says it's necessary to support young people with proper training and instruction to improve road safety, as the current rules allow 16-year-olds to operate large tractors with only a learner permit.
He says this is absolutely necessary to continue supporting the farming industry as a whole.
