Over 100 active targets across the Shannonside Northern Sound region have been identified by the Criminal Assets Bureau. The figures come from the Garda Division's recent per-county breakdown. The Criminal Assets Bureau carries out investigations into individuals who are suspected of withholding assets acquired through criminal means. Since 1996, the bureau has seized over €174 million in taxes and €6.5 million in social protection recoveries.
The Roscommon-Longford area holds the highest number of currently active target cases, at 79, followed by Cavan and Monaghan at 21. Sligo-Leitrim currently holds the lowest figure, at 10 detected targets. Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, Detective Chief Superintendent, Michael Gubbins, said that the Criminal Assets Bureau relies on the public's reports during their investigations:
