Planning permission is being sought for the construction of a massive windfarm in County Longford. Bord na Móna Powergen Limited are seeking to construct 22 wind turbines on lands close to Lanesboro in Longford.
The company has this week signaled their intention to formally seek planning permission from An Bord Pleanála for the energy infrastructure around Lanesboro. The turbines, which would have a blade tip height of 190 metres, would be located across 34 townlands such as Aghamore, Annaghabeg, Ballynakill, Corlea, Derryad, Derryart, Mosstown and Rappareehill.
Due to the scale of the project, the application is considered strategic infrastructure and thereby passes the local authority planning department and is considered directly by An Bord Pleanála. The plans include the 22 turbines and their associated hard stands, 27 kilometres of new internal access roads and two permanent 120 metre tall metrological masts.
The electrical infrastructure would include one 110 kilovolt substation compound including two control buildings, a 36 metre high telecom mast and electrical plant. All associated electrical and communication cabling from the masts to the electrical substation would be underground and at points cross the N63.
As part of the development, the applicants would also construct a 16 megawatt battery storage facility. Bord na Móna Powergen are also proposing to over 7 and half kilometres of amenity access tracks from windfarm sites onto the Royal Canal Greenway, Corlea Trackway and the Midlands Trail Network.
As part of this section of the plan, the developers would construct three permanent amenity car parks, with 19 spaces each. A 10 year planning permission is now being sought from An Bord Pleanála by the applicants.
