The body of a Leitrim man who died in suspicious circumstances six years ago is being exhumed today.
It's part of a cold case investigation into Liam Farrell's death.
The 87-year-old was found dead at the back of his house in Rooskey in January 2020, in a bloodied and bruised state.
No forensic pathologist examined his remains at the time, which would normally happen in suspicious cases.
His official cause of death was a heart attack, but his family believes he was violently attacked beforehand.
An inquest in September 2024 in Carrick-on-Shannon returned an open verdict.
Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly ordered a cold case investigation into his death last September.
The gardai then asked for his body to be exhumed, which is taking place today in Cloonmorris cemetery, Bornacoola.
Afterwards, a forensic post mortem exam will take place, supported by an anthropologist.
Former head of the cold case unit, Alan Bailey, says a murder investigation will be launched if the exhumation reveals he was assaulted.
