Attempted theft of €12,000 from Athlone woman's bank account

Gardai are investigating how exactly the fraudsters accessed her details

Gardaí in Athlone are advising people to try to check their bank accounts on a regular basis after a woman reported almost €12,000 euro take from her account yesterday.

The woman is understood not to have given details of her account over the phone to anyone, or to have had her card stolen, and investigations are underway to try to find out how access was gained to her account.

A second report of theft from an account was also made at Athlone station yesterday, this time for the much smaller amount of €150 euro.

Gardai say fraudsters are using increasingly sophisticated means of targeting bank accounts and it's in everyone's interest to keep as close an eye as possible on their transactions.
