The units would consist of 94 houses and 36 apartments.

Also included in the application is a new access point off the Ballinderry Road as well as cycle tracks, footpaths, the demolition of an existing dwelling, and associated works.

Westmeath County Council initially granted permission however it was appealed to An Bórd Pleanála following a number of submissions by local residents.

They were concerned that the road servicing the new estate could not handle increased traffic.

While residents of a neighbouring estate argued that the new build would cause increased light and noise pollution.

These residents were also opposed to a cycle track that would pass through their estate.

An Bórd Pleanála ultimately decided to overturn the appeal and grant the permission, finding that the proposed build falls within the county development plan and would not have an adverse effect on the local area
