85% of Roscommon septic tanks fail environmental inspections

The failure rate was 61 per cent in Leitrim and 40 per cent in Longford.

85 per cent of septic tanks in Co Roscommon inspected last year failed environmental inspections, according to a new EPA report.

The agency says many faulty systems are putting drinking water wells and rivers at risk from contamination.

More than 14,000 inspections were carried out in 2025, with issues including leaks, illegal discharges and poor maintenance identified.

The failure rate was 61 per cent in Leitrim and 40 per cent in Longford.

Homeowners can apply for grants of up to €12,000 to fix defective systems.
