St. John's Athletic's Connacht Cup adventure came to an end after they succumbed to a 5-2 defeat after extra-time to reigning champions Castlebar Celtic in Lecarrow.
The Mayo side started brightly and took the lead after just ten minutes. Jordan Loftus converted from the spot after Niall Brennan was fouled in the penalty area by Simon Leonard.
The hosts hit back in stoppage time at the end of the half. Cian Kelly, close-range shot went in off Castlebar keeper Stefan Hester.
St. John's had plenty of the second-half possession and should have been have been ahead. Kevin Brennan had the goal at his mercy just two minutes in but the ball came back off the post.
Castlebar's lead was restored after 74 minutes when substitute Luke Kelly rounded John's keeper Aidan Fallon and finished cooly.
The visitors looked to have booked their place in the final until two minutes from time. Cian Kelly popped up with a well-taken equaliser for St John's.
Kelly finishing superbly from the left-hand side following good work from Eamon Harney and Daire Keenan to force extra-time.
The Mayo side regained the lead just five minutes into extra-time when Luke Kelly grabbed his second with a glancing header from an Oran Groarke free-kick.
Man-of-the-match Jordan Loftus then grabbed his second in the third minute of the second-period following a good cross from substitute Eoghan Hughes.
And Castlebar confirmed their place in this year's final thanks to a late goal by Fionn Mahon. Mahon, was then saw red following a second yellow card, haven taken his shirt off in the celebrations.
Harsh perhaps on a brave St. John's Athletic side but Castlebar progress to face Mervue United in the Connacht final.
