Roscommon LGFA Division 1 Under 19 Championship Final

Today saw St Brigid’s take on Boyle in the inaugural Roscommon LGFA U19 Division 1 final in Kiltoom

These talented teams had already met in the group stages of the competition in August in a game that St Brigid’s won, only with scores in second-half stoppage time.

Boyle won the throw-in and went on the attack only to find a wall of St Brigid’s girls blocking the path to goal in a pattern that was to repeat itself throughout. Both sides pressed but it was St Brigid’s who struck first when Shauna Loftus scythed through the Boyle defence and beat the keeper to leave St Brigid’s up by a goal to no score.

The early game nerves were evident by both teams as they tried to get a winning start to the game soon dropped as St Brigid’s attack gained the upper hand and played much of the quarter in the Boyle half, scoring two points before finishing a great quarter with a sweetly struck goal from Andrea Whyte. St Brigid’s led at the first water break by 2:4 (10) to 0-1(1).

After the water break, Boyle were transformed and St Brigid’s struggled to match them. Last week Boyle came from 10 points down against Clann na nGael in their semi-final to win by 13 points and that self-belief was evident again in this quarter.

Boyle chipped away at St Brigid’s lead with three unanswered points and pressed the St Brigid’s girls deep into their own half.

Boyle won a penalty after a goalmouth scramble and Aisling Feely struck it perfectly to evade the despairing Holly Martin dive. Boyle were clearly in the ascendancy and the half-time whistle came as a relief to the St Brigid’s team who failed to raise a flag in this quarter. The half-time score: St Brigid’s: 2-4(10) Boyle: 1-4(7)

The third quarter was closely fought and both sides had to work extremely hard for every score, both teams had only registered one additional point each, 10 minutes into the second-half.

The game then turned decisively in St Brigid’s favour when Lauren Gallagher was felled when attempting a shot on goal and the referee awarded a penalty. Marian Nolan took full advantage of this penalty and made no mistake driving the ball hard and high into the back of the net to put some daylight between the teams.

Boyle scored another point to reduce the deficit slightly, but at the last water break St Brigid’s led 3-6(15) to 1-6(9).

The final quarter saw St Brigid’s extend their lead with a great team goal finished by Ria Lennon but Boyle fought back with an audacious goal of their own, courtesy of a thunderbolt free kick from Aisling Feely.

St Brigid’s had the strength to hold off Boyle and matched them score for score in the final quarter to come out as champions and win the first ladies minor championship since 2007.

For St Brigid’s Ladies, this is their first minor championship title since 2007 but this is a squad that is used to winning.

Today’s victory is the sixth consecutive Division 1 championship title for these ladies, a run that stretches back to 2016 when they won the Under 12 Championship.

In this time, they have also represented Roscommon at Feile and represented Roscommon and Connaught at the All-Ireland Community games finals losing out narrowly in the Final against Westmeath.

The team also has nine ladies who lined out for the Senior team who lost out to Kilbride in the Senior championship semi-final last month. This year Clann na nGael signalled a changing of the guard when they became Roscommon Senior Champions but today St Brigid’s showed that there is another squad in Roscommon who will be challenging for top honours in the years ahead.

Final Score: St Brigid’s: 4-8(20) Boyle: 2-8(14).

St Brigids: Holly Martin, Rebecca Collins, Aine McGrath, Emma Gallagher, Aoibhe Lennon, Johanna Hughes, Anna Donovan, Ria Lennon (1-0), Marian Nolan (1-1), Lauren Gallagher, Abby Curran (0-1), Doireann Ni Ruairc, Amy Fallon, Shauna Loftus (1-0), Andrea Whyte (1-4), Sarah O’Rourke (0-2), Hannah Lennon, Amy Gallagher, Heather McGrane.
