Longford Town suffer first defeat of the season

Gary Buckley second-half header saw Sligo Rovers maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a narrow one-nil victory away to Longford Town at Bishopsgate.

Sligo shaded the first-half and created the better chances, the first of which arrived in the seventh minute, when Sligo defender Robbie McCourt directed a 22-yard free-kick into the Longford side-netting.

On 21 minutes, Sligo created another opportunity but a Jordan Gibson shot from just inside the Longford box, went through the legs of several players was well gathered by Town keeper Lee Steacy.


The Town’s best chance of the opening half arrived on 33 minutes, substitute Callum Thompson whipped in right-wing cross found Warfield, but he fired his effort into the side-netting.

The best opportunity of the first-half went to the visitors five minutes before the break, but they were thwarted by a brilliant save from Town keeper Steacy.

Niall Morahan’s superb pass found Romeo Parkes just inside the Town box, he expertly held the ball up, laying it off into the path of striker Johnny Kenny, his rocketing curling 16-yard strike was magnificently tipped away by Steacy.


Gary Buckley put the visitors ahead two minutes into the second-half. Robbie McCourt's corner from the right was headed back across goal by Parkes and Sligo defender Buckley reacted quickest to head home from close range.

Town almost equalized on three minutes later, Aodh Dervin pounced on a loose ball inside the Sligo penalty area only for his shot to flash inches wide.

Longford’s final chance of drawing level came on 83 minutes but Dervin’s angled shot from 12-yards out deflected of a Sligo defender and went narrowly past the far post.


Longford Town (4-3-2-1): Steacy, Chambers, O’Driscoll, Gorman, Kirk, Dervin, Bolger, Zamba, Grimes, Byrne, Warfield.

Substitutes: Thompson for Byrne (30 minutes), Dobbs for Warfield (37 minutes), McNally for Chambers and Davies for Zamba (both 69 minutes).

Sligo Rovers (4-2-3-1): McGinnity, Horgan, Buckley, Mahon, McCourt, Bolger, Morahan, Gibson, Cawley, Parkes, Kenny.


Substitutes: Byrne for Cawley (64 minutes), De Vries for Kenny (72 minutes), Figuiera for Gibson (81 minutes).
