Tyrone's Darragh Canavan was the difference scoring eight points overall,.

Roscommon opened their Allianz football league division one campaign with a 17 points to 1-11 defeat at the hands of 14-man Tyrone at Omagh.

Despite playing the last half hour with 14 men, the hosts still produced a strong second-half display which resulted in victory.

The sides traded three points each inside the opening 12 minutes. Diarmuid Murtagh, Niall Daly and Ciaran Lennon on target for the Rossies.

Roscommon gained the upper hand on 14 minutes. Donie Smith finished to the net as Roscommon led 1-3 to 0-4.

Tyrone restored parity on the half hour mark when Ben Cullen slotted over a score. Four minutes later, Niall Devlin added another point as Tyrone led 0-10 to 1-6 at the break.

Tyrone’s hopes of winning were dealt a major blow five minutes into the second half as Conn Kilpatrick was sent off.

Nonetheless, Darragh Canavan slotted over two scores in 60 seconds as Tyrone opened up a three-point gap on 48 minutes.

Canavan finished the day with eight points overall. His pointed free on 64 minutes saw Tyrone move five points clear.

Roscommon responded impressively. Points from Murtagh and James Fitzpatrick left three points between them 60 seconds from time.

Canavan landed another pointed free before Roscommon had a goal disallowed two minutes into injury time.

Cian Connolly punched the ball to the net, only for his effort to be chalked off due to a square ball.

Murtagh replied with a pointed free for Roscommon 60 seconds later but the visitors still suffered defeat.
