Bad weather over the weekend caused major disruption to games with only a limited number going ahead as planned.
The Joe Kelly sponsored Challenge Cup took centre stage but only one of the eight games due to be played went ahead as scheduled.
Division 1 side Cloonfad United beat Premier Division side Shiven Rovers 3–2 in a very close game at Cloonfad.
The hosts started well and were 2-0 up after only five minutes. Michael McGarry scored both goals. With 27 minutes played, the Newbridge side pulled one back when Stephen Murray scored from the penalty spot.
Shiven missed some good chances to level the game before half-time. Indeed, Andy Glennon made it 3–1 to Cloonfad with a super strike on 51 minutes.
The talented Stephen Murray continued his great scoring run with a second goal for Shiven on 69 minutes. However, the visitors were unable to find an equaliser despite dominating.
Last season’s finalists Glen Celtic received a walk over C.P Ajax.
In the David Kelly sponsored Shield, Ballyboro are through to the next round following their comfortable 6–0 win over Ballinagare at Lanesboro.
Jack Murray and David Rooney gave Ballyboro a 2–0 half-time lead. David Rooney added three more after the break and Aidan Rooney one to complete the scoring.
Castlerea come out out top in derby
In a local derby game Castlerea Celtic’s second side beat the Ballinlough side Lough Harps 3–1 at Castlerea.
Conor Murray Kelly opened the scoring for the winners on 28 minutes. Gerry Ward added their second before half-time and Conor Murray Kelly added a third on 68 minutes.
Ballaghaderreen F.C beat Moore “B” 8-1 at Lecarrow. Shane Towey gave the winners the lead after 16 minutes. However, Shane Lacey levelled the game for the Moore side six minutes later.
Danny Browne and Cormack Rushe added two more for Ballaghaderreen before half-time. Christopher Dunne scored two more after the break. Indeed, Liam Frain, Shane Towey and Peter Horan completed the scoring for Ballaghaderreen against a young Moore side.
Ballinasloe Town are also through to the next round following an 8–0 win in an early morning start over a very young Cloonfad second side at Ballinasloe.
Ryan McCombe scored four for Ballinasloe, with Joshua Gaynor adding two more. Whereas, Cian Campbell and Daragh Concannon added one each.
In the Women’s Connacht Shield, Kilkerrin United are through to Round three following a 5–1 win over Shiven Rovers at Kilkerrin. Ali O’Toole scored three and Caitlin Boyle two for Kilkerrin.
