Connacht U20 championship goes to the final day

Roscommon struck in the final moments of a low scoring U20 game to draw with Galway.

A damp and miserable Dr. Hyde Park watched on as Galway and Roscommon drew six points each.

Shane McGinley’s converted free, two minutes into injury time sealing a draw, which means Roscommon need to beat Leitrim next Wednesday to progress.

The game was remarkably low scoring. Galway leading three points to two at half-time. Rory Hester and Rob Heneghan with Roscommon’s points as they went two points to nil ahead on 20 minutes.

Two points from Colm Costello and a Matthew Thompson free saw Galway lead three to two at half-time. Galway never trailed from that moment.

A Colm Costello mark five minutes after the restart moved Galway two points clear. Shane McGinley scored Roscommon’s first point of the second half on 40 minutes.

Costello restored Galway’s two point lead, 0-5 to 0-3 on 43 minutes. A Shane McGinley free six minutes from time set up a grand stand finish.

Big Finish

Niall O’Donnell sent over the levelling score from play as the clock struck 60 minutes. However, there was more drama to follow.

Cian Murphy restored Galways lead nearly immediately with another Shane McGinley free securing a draw two minutes into injury time.

It means Roscommon go into their final group game against Leitrim with three points. The group winner progress automatically to the final with second and third place meeting in a semi-final.

Sligo stay alive in the competition as a last gasp penalty saved a draw against Leitrim. Defending champions Sligo head to Mayo needing a win to have any chance of progressing.

A win for either Roscommon or Leitrim could see them grab the final spot.
