Roscommon and district league round-up

Roscommon and district league bow out of Oscar Traynor Cup

The Roscommon and district league bowed out of this seasons Oscar Traynor Cup after a 2–2 home draw with the Mayo League.

With Galway beating Sligo/Leitrim 5–0 and only one team from Connacht progressing to the semi-finals, the RDFL side bow out.

This game was a hard-fought battle between two evenly matched teams who gave it their all to secure a win.

The Roscommon & district league side got off to a great start with the Shiven Rovers player Adam Farrell giving them the lead after two minutes.

The visitors were level four minutes later, when Ryan Connolly’s volley took a deflection before ending up in the hosts net.

Stephen Murray and Cian Kelly had two fine efforts well saved by the Mayo keeper. With half-time approaching, St. Johns player Daire Keenan was only inches away from scoring.

Shane Dunning replaced Keith Murphy at the half-time. On the 50 minute mark, Tommy Hurley rounded the Mayo keeper. However, from a very tight angle his shot came back off the post.

Mark Maloney gave the Mayo side a 2-1 lead on 53 minutes. However, 11 minutes later Stephen Murray had the side’s level.

Indeed, both teams had chances near the end but overall, a draw was a fair result.

Elsewhere, only a small number of games were played in the league.

In the P K Trailers sponsored Division 1 leaders Ballinahown and second placed St. Johns Athletic “B” both won their games.

Ballinahown travelled to Cloonfad and came away with a 3–2 win. Shane Allen gave Ballinahown the lead after 30 minutes.

However, Michael McGreal had the side’s level four minutes before half-time. Shane Allen struck his second before half-time and Terry Byrne added a third for Ballinahown just after the restart.

Ballinahown lead division one

Neil Morris created an opening for Michael McGarry to score his second for Cloonfad with 10 minutes remaining. However, Cloonfad couldn’t find an equaliser.

St. Johns Athletic “B” had a 3–2 win over Ballinasloe Town at Lecarrow. Jamie Tiernan scored two and Conor Murphy one for St. Johns.

In Division 2, Carrick Town moved into third place in the table after a 6-1 win over Ballinagare at Carrick-on-Shannon.

Fursey Butler opened the scoring after 12 minutes and Amas Tobi added two more just before half-time.

Narada Patrasco, Niall Bambrick and Brandon Boyce added three more in the second-half with Tom Ward replying for Ballinagare.

Rahara Rovers were beaten 3–2 in a good game at home to Cloonfad United’s second side. A strong wind dictated the play throughout the game.

The visitors played with the aid of the first-half wind and were rewarded with Kealan Flynn two goals at half-time.

In the second-half it was Rahara’s turn to dominate. They were soon level through a David Dowd header and an Evan Donnelly chip over the keeper.

Rahara pushed for a winner. However, with six minutes remaining a sucker punch from Eoin Heneghan won all three points for the visitors.

In the Women’s league Boyle Celtic beat Shiven Rovers 2–0 at Boyle. Emma Duggan and Ciara Byrne scored two late goals to secure all three points.

There will be no games over the coming weeks due to the Christmas break
