Paul Townend becomes most succesful Cheltenham jockey

Willie Mullins landed his fifth Gold Cup equalling the record of fellow Irish trainer Tom Dreaper.

Paul Townend saddled Gaelic Warrior's eight-lengths victory in this afternoon's Gold Cup.

Today’s win followed wins for the duo in the Champion Hurdle and Queen Mother Champion Chase earlier in the week.

“I think the ground probably suited him” explained Mullins. “But he'd been a horse, a force waiting to happen. I mean, when we got him as a four-year-old, he was beaten here in the Fred Winter”.

“We couldn't believe it. You know, we went on like, what went wrong? And, he's come back here and he's won since, but to do what he did today was what we see at home every day. He's just an incredible horse”.

He's a lovely horse at home” explained Mullins. “Elliot, who looked after him, He doesn't receive any other special treatment except that he's a good horse in his barn”.

Mullins reserved special praise for Paul Towned who became the most successful Cheltenham jockey with Gaelic Warrior’s win.

“And finally a word for Paul Townend who as you rightly said to me before we started this interview has become the most successful Gold Cup jockey in history”.

“Which I didn't realise until after the race. So I'm delighted. He's just so cool, so calm. I mean we all remember the day back in Ponson when He ran out the wrong side of the wing going for last”.

“That would have, I think, put a lot of jockeys away, put their careers away. Paul came out the following day and rode four winners”.

“He puts things behind him and he gets on with the job." Mullins went on, he is so cool, he's so calm, and when the going gets tough, he gets going”.

“He just doesn't let things get to him. And he's very understated. You'd hardly know that he'd ridden a winner, never mind five gold companies. That's the type of guy he is”.
