Moycullen advance as Strokestown bow out

Strokestown bowed out of the Connacht club championship after a 2-8 to seven point defeat to Moycullen after extra-time.

In a remarkable game which finished seven points each after normal time, with just five points being scored in the second-half.

Strokestown shot into a three point lead. Two Diarmuid McCann frees and a Shane McGinley 45 saw the Roscommon champion’s three points to no score ahead after four minutes.

McGinley converted a second 45 as Moycullen rallied. Eoin Gallagher and Dessie Kenneally with two points each had the game level on 22 minutes.

McCann moved Strokestown back infront with another 45. Points from Gallagher and Kenneally saw Moycullen lead six points to five at half-time.

Remarkably it would take another 24 second-half minutes for another score. Dessie Kenneally’s free made it a two point game.

Diarmuid McCann and Colin Compton both send over points from play sending the game to extra-time.

The match swung in four minutes into extra-time. Paul Kelly edged Moycullen ahead.

Strokestown made a mess of a quick restart which Moycullen overturned the ball, Paul Kelly following up a good save to find the net.

A black card saw Moycullen reduced to 14-men, however Keith Murphy’s red card saw Strokestown down to 14.

The Roscommon champions never fashioned a second-half chance and it was left for Gerard Dervin to finish a Moycullen move with a goal and book their place in the Connacht final.
