Longford Town have rejected an FAI approach to move their home games to Friday nights.
Longford and Sligo Rovers are currently the only two league of Ireland clubs who do not play their home games on a Friday night. However, both favour Saturday nights
League of Ireland director Mark Scanlon told the LOI Central podcast; both clubs had rejected an FAI request to move to Friday night home games.
“We have formally asked both clubs to move to Friday nights” explained Scanlon. “I know there is very different talk about spreading games across the weekend”.
“For us (the FAI), we think owning the Friday night is important. We have really good ownerships of that space across the season”.
“Wether that is watching the games live on TV, LOI TV, attending a game” or listening live on the radio “I think owning that space is important”.
“For now we’d would like to see all of the games on that night, but for now, Sligo Rovers and Longford have decided to stay on Saturday’s”.
The 2026 League of Ireland fixtures will be released on Tuesday December 16. Whereas, the SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division commences on Friday, February 13 2026.
