Longford Slashers clinch seventh consecutive Longford ladies title

Slashers claim seventh senior title in a row

A strong first-half with five goals proved the difference as Longford Slashers made it seven senior championships in-a-row.

Kate Shannon and Kara Shannon opened the scoring for Longford Slashers with a point each inside the opening two minutes.

Clonguish replied with two points of their own coming from the boot of Ciara Healy.

Slashers built a two point lead again through Grace Shannon and Grace O’Donnell but were pegged level when Shauna Madden and Aoife Darcy replied for Clonguish.

After 11 minutes of play the teams were tied at four points apiece.

However, that was as good as it got for Clonguish. Slashers went on a seven minutes goal route in which they raised the green flag four times.

Clodagh Lohan won a penalty on 13 minutes which Kate Shannon converted. Clodagh Lohan then two goals of her own with the first on 15 minutes, before adding another three minutes later.

After 20 minutes. Kate Shannon got her second goal of the day as Slashers moved into a 13-point lead, having hit four goals in seven minutes.

Aoife Darcy registered another point for Clonguish as they looked to weather the Slashers storm. However, Orla Nevin rounded Aoife Cooney to score the fifth goal of the day for Slashers after 27 minutes.

Aoife Darcy registered another point for Clonguish, before Mairead Moore rattled the post for the Newtown Forbes outfit. Slashers took a 16-point lead to the break. At half-time it was Longford Slashers leading 5-7 to six-points.

Clodagh Lohan opened the scoring in the second-half as the Clonguish defence were struggling to cope with the problems she was causing.

Niamh Sheridan opened the scoring for Clonguish three minutes later.

Slashers hit three points on the bounce through Grace Shannon, Clodagh Lohan and Kate Shannon, opening up a 19 point gap after 41 minutes.

Aoife Darcy and Sophia Carey kept the scoreboard ticking over for Clonguish who were, showing signs of improvement in the second period.

However, Slashers now in full control, continued their dominance. Further scores coming through Kate Shannon, Kara Shannon and Orla Nevin.

Points in injury time from Shauna Madden and Aoife Darcy came as little more than consolation for Clonguish.

Longford Slashers ran out 16 point winners; securing their seventh consecutive Longford title on a score line 5-15 to 14 points.

Next up for Longford Slashers is a meeting with Kilmacud Crokes of Dublin, in a repeat of last year’s Leinster championship semi-final.
