Longford Phoenix Basketball Club notes

The midlands cup semi-finals and finals took place over the weekend with both Phoenix  U-18 girls and the U-16 boys in the last four.

Both teams won their respective semi-finals on the Friday night to qualify for Saturday’s cup finals

Our U-18 Girls travelled to Kilcullen on Friday evening to take on Larrie Birds in their semi-final and 26 points from Denise Mondo helped Phoenix to defeat the Kildare side 49-34.

The final proved to be a glorious day for the club. The Phoenix team away in the last quarter against North Kildare Eagles to win the Midlands Division Two Cup final.

Phoenix winning out 40-28. Denise Mondo again top-scored with twenty-seven points.

Phoenix U16 Boys overcame a strong Kildare Gliders side in Friday night’s Midland Cup (Division 1) semi-final in Newbridge.

After a solid start where, five different players scored in the first quarter, Phoenix held a six-point lead. Although the game remained close to the end. Phoenix never relinquished that lead to book their place in the final 41-33.

The final was held on Saturday in Clonaslee and despite a solid early start, Phoenix soon found themselves trailing by 20 points to a strong Portlaoise Panthers side.

A switch in defence brought an improvement for a brief time until Portlaoise reasserted their superiority to run out deserving winners 76-51.

LLR League

Due to our U-16 Boys reaching the Midlands cup final, their games against Ballinamore at the weekend were postponed.

Our U-12 girls won their home match against Mohill 27-12. Although there was no competitive action for our U-12 Boys team at the weekend. They hosted a friendly against the Multi Lakers and came out on top by 50-20.
