Longford Phoenix Basketball club notes

Longford Phoenix inclusion teams travelled to Claregalway recently to take part in Special Olympics Connacht Basketball League 2023.

Longford Phoenix Teams were by far the newest Teams and competed against teams which have been established for 20 years.

The ladies played faced neighbours Athlone, a team which included three world players. Phoenix was at a disadvantage in the height stakes and failed to score in the first-half.

However, the Longford ladies made a great comeback in the second-half scoring 12 points. Earning themselves the title ‘The Comeback Queens’ with all players scoring. Final-score Athlone 20 Longford Phoenix 12.

The ladies face Galway tribes in their second game, a team with a very deep Bench. While the ladies scored, they struggled with the lower baskets on court two.

Our young men also had games against Galway Tribes and Athlone. We only had four players, so for the first game two Ballina players competed on the Phoenix team. Phoenix were still outclassed by the very impressive Galway Tribes men.

Our players found the size of the opposition intimidating and were forced to take outside shots which just did not drop on the day. A big thank you to Kevin and Killian form Ballina.

The second men’s game against Athlone, with Conor from Galway Tribes played with Phoenix. Conor is an outstanding player and his example on court elevated the standard of Phoenix play. Despite improved play Phoenix lost to a very strong Athlone side.

Despite our losses it was a great experience for the Phoenix players. There was a great atmosphere, everyone was encouraged and supported. The experience of competitive games was invaluable.

Thank you to Ballina and Galway Tribes for providing us with players. Great co-operation and true sporting spirit

A huge debt of gratitude to the organisers for their organisation, Inclusion, encouragement, support, food and drink supplies and welcoming atmosphere. We look forward to the next event.
