Longford hurlers defeat Cavan for Lory Meagher Cup final place

Longford will now play Louth in the Lory Meagher Cup final on the fourth weekend in May.

The Longford hurlers reached the Lory Meagher Cup final following a 0-27 to 2-14 victory over Cavan at Kingspan Breffni Park in the final group fixture.

Cavan started better and led 0-4 to 0-0 inside five minutes. Joe O’Brien initiated Longford’s recovery with their opening point a minute later and the visitors suddenly led 0-10 to 0-9 at half-time.

Six Longford points on the trot opened up a seven-point gap on 42 minutes;  Cathal Mullane (two),  Joe O’Brien (two), Paddy Lynam and Cian Kavanagh were all to the fore.

Longford increased their lead to 11 points 12 minutes from time and while Cavan replied with two late goals from Canice Maher and Rory Farrell, they still suffered a heavy defeat.
