Roscommon and district league round-up

Cloonfad United are safely through to the Connacht shield quarter-finals following a 3-1 win over Mervue United B at Cloonfad.

Mervue went one ahead on 12 minutes through Sean Dipson. Whereas, Conor Ruane levelled on 20 minutes, Luke Ruane put Cloonfad 2-1 on 43 minutes.

A spectacular James Brennan goal on 54 minutes sealed the 3-1 win for Cloonfad.

The surprise result of the day was the defeat of Premier side Boyle Celtic by Division 1 side Ballinagare/Manor United at Ballinagare.

Boyle Celtic finished with nine men after two sending-offs for two bookings each.

Ballinagare/Manor started on the front foot and Jay McCartney stuck a brilliant shoot in to roof of net.

Shortly after Gerry lobbed the advancing keeper to make it 2-0 after 20 minutes. Five minutes later captain Alan Keane headed in from a corner kick to make 3-0 at half-time.

In the second-half it was one way traffic again, when Boyle were reduced to 10 men. Gerry Ward converted two penalties.

The division one side Glen Celtic were beaten 2-1 away to Claremorris. Ryan Duffy with the Glen Celtic goal. Premier side Ballinasloe Town were beaten 3-1 away to Dromahair. Jonathon Moloney scored for Ballinasole.

Meanwhile, in the Premier Division Moore United had a 5-0 win over Castlerea Celtic at Castlerea.

Moore started brightly and dominated position from the start. After three minutes, a great though ball put Charles Nevin through on goal and Nevin made no mistake with slotting the ball under the keeper.

Nevin made it 2-0 on 12 minutes. Moore’s third goal arrived five minutes into the second-half through Jack Nevin. Nevon secured his hat-trick with a fine struck from outside the penalty area.

Nevin made it 5-0 late-on as Castlerea finished with nine men.

CP Ajax score important win

The Castleplunket side CP Ajax had a valuable 2-1 win over St. Johns Athletic at Lecarrow.

St John’s took the lead in the first-half through Jamie Tiernan. CP upped the tempo in the second-half and began to get more of a foothold in the game.

With 15 minutes remaining, substitute Elias Junior got CP back on level terms, heading home a Dan Connolly cross from the left wing.

Then, with less than 10 minutes remaining, Paul Mee scored a cracker from just inside the opposition-half after spotting the St. John’s keeper off his line.

Skyvalley Rovers held onto top spot in Division 1 thanks to a hard earned 2-1 win over Moylough 79 at Moylough.

A 15th minute Emmet Kelly corner found Mike Donoghue, who header home. Moylough equalised just before half-time. Mike Foley’s free-kick and found the bottom corner from a few yards outside the box.

Both sides had chances but it was Skyvalley who scored what proved to be the winner with an Emmet Kelly tap-in.

Ballaghaderreen first-side lost 3-1 after extra-time at home to Shiven Rovers in the Divisional Cup qualifier. Seamus Cunniffe bundled the ball home, giving Ballaghaderreen the lead 15 minutes into the second-half.

Indeed, Shiven equalised with 10 minutes remaining through Gabrial Costa, sending the game to extra-time.

Shiven took the lead two minutes into the first period when Lucas Costa finished neatly after a mistake in the home defence. Ballaghaderreen threw everything but the kitchen sink at Shiven but their defence stood firm.

Keith Murphy added a third for Shiven on the counter attack with two minutes remaining.

In Division two Roscommon United beat Rahara Rovers 3-1 at Rahara on Sunday.

Roscommon United fight back

Rahara opened the scoring after 35 minutes when brothers Dylan and Evan Donnelly combined well with Evan smashing home from outside the box.

Roscommon equalised on the hour mark through Marcel Gala. The hosts were caught by two sucker punches in the last five minutes through Jay Donlon and Marcel Gala again.

In the Roscommon & District Women’s League, Boyle Celtic ladies beat St Cuans/Ahascragh United 6- 0 at Boyle. Sinead O‘Donughue, Niamh McNamara, Ciara Byrne, Emma Duggan and two from Christine Glynn were the goal scorers.

Cam Celtic beat Ballinasloe Town 3-0 at Lecarrow. Whereas, Shiven Rovers beat Ballaghaderreen 2-1 at Ballaghaderreen.

Allanagh McGrath opened the scoring for Ballaghadreen on 25 minutes. Muirne Kilcommins equalized on 32 and Rachel Farrell got the winner on 67 minutes.

Indeed, Kilkerrin United beat Castlerea Celtic 2-1 at Kilkerrin. Sarah Ward and Karen Finnegan for Kilkerrin and Aoife Smyth for Castlerea with the goals.

In the men’s Reserve Division, Dunmore Town beat Moore United 6-2 at Dunmore.
