On Saturday Sport Tributes were paid to the late Roscommon GAA legend, Donie Shine who passed away just over a week ago. Donie enjoyed a successful playing career with Clann Na Ngael and also played for Roscommon during the 1974 National Football league campaign.
It was as a manager that he enjoyed most success and when he was in charge of Clann na nGael as they dominated Roscommon and Connacht football from 1986 until 1990.During his reign as club manager, Clann embarked on a run which included the South Roscommon club winning eight county senior football titles, six Connacht football titles and they competed in the All Ireland finals of 1987, 1988, 1989 and 1990. Unfortunately, they never finished in the winners enclosure, but nevertheless they were widely regarded as one of the finest teams of their generation.
Donie Shine went on to manage Roscommon at Junior, Minor and Under 21 level. He was senior manager up until 1997 before a Connacht championship defeat at the hands of Sligo brought down the curtain on his managerial career with the Roscommon senior team.
In more recent years the Donie Shine played a significant role on GAA analysis with Shannonside FM and was an ever present for all major games involving Roscommon County and Club teams. Shine will be best remembered for working on memorable commentaries alongside Willie Hegarty for the All Ireland minor final of 2006, the Connacht Senior Football Final of 2010 (a clip of which features in the podcast) and the All Ireland Club final of 2013 where St Brigid’s were crowned All Ireland Champions.
